7 Steps to Top-Up Water in Inverter Battery

Why does Inverter Battery Need Water?

The inverter battery is a device that store chemical energy and convert it to electrical energy via a chemical reaction.

Inverter batteries use diluted sulphuric acid for their chemical reactions and over time, the water volume decreases and the solution becomes concentrated. This requires topping with special kind of Water, to keep the sulphuric acid diluted and maintain designed specific gravity-SG. These activities promote better Battery efficiency.

However, do not pour just any water into the battery. It is advised to always use demineralized water for the inverter battery.

What is demineralized Water?

Demineralized water is a clean form of water. Unlike regular tap water, demineralized water does not contain ions, minerals, or Salt. Therefore, it is useful for Lead acid batteries applications.

Why Use demineralized Water for Inverter Batteries?

Regular water contains ions and organic compounds. When you use this type of water in your battery, the ions block the electrodes and form layers that inhibit the chemical reactions that produce current. This also applies to water that contains organic compounds or dust particles.

Demineralized water is free of these ions and does not cause any problems for the electrodes. Therefore, only use demineralized water in your inverter battery to ensure your battery works optimally.

When to Put Demineralized Water in an Inverter?

Every battery has an indicator for inverter battery water filler level.

When the indicator is on the “Green” mark, it means you have adequate water in the inverter, and it is completely topped off. But if the water on the "Red" mark, it means it is below the recommended level and needs to be topped up.

Always make sure that the level is below the Green mark and above the Red mark. If it goes below Red, the acid is too concentrated, and the inverter can’t perform at its highest level. If the water level rises above the Green level, the acid has been diluted too much and its functioning may be affected as well.

Steps Involved in Filling Demineralized Water in the Inverter Battery

Step 1: First you check the level of distilled water in the battery with the aid of the water level indications. The water level indicates the amount of distilled water in the inverter battery. While the upper level has a green marker, the lower level has a red marker.

Step 2: The red marker indicates the water level is low and must be filled. However, you should switch off the inverter and the power socket before starting.

Step 3: Remove the water topping vent plugs by twisting them in an anticlockwise direction.

Step 4: Once you have detached the vent plug, place a funnel in the hole and gradually pour the distilled water into the chamber.

Step 5: Repeat this process for all the battery chambers. You can measure the level of water that has been filled by placing the vent back into the hole and filling it up until it reaches the green mark.

Step 6: After that is done, place the vent plug back into the chamber and rotate clockwise to close it. Repeat this process for all chambers in the same way.

Step 7: Finally, clean the battery, vent plugs, and water level indicators with a clean cloth or wipe them.

Once you finish filling the battery with distilled water, you can restart the power.
